Fluoroborates without the etch Soxhlet | Chemistry World

Fluoroborates without the etch Soxhlet | Chemistry World - A simple, practical method for making popular trifluoroborate reagents without etching glassware or tedious purification procedures has been developed by chemists in the UK. The method should make trifluoroborates more readily available, especially those containing more delicate functionality.(10.1002/anie.201203930)

Why can we walk on custard?

Why can we walk on custard? - As once famously demonstrated on a UK television show (video), you can walk over a swimming pool filled with custard. Two US physicists have now explained why. Reference: S R Waitukaitis and H M Jaeger, Nature, 2012, 487, 205 (10.1038/nature11187).

UK chemists tame terminal uranium nitride

UK chemists tame terminal uranium nitride - UK chemists have made the world’s first terminal uranium nitride complex that is stable at room temperature. Previously terminal uranium nitrides – in which a single uranium is attached to a single nitrogen through a triple bond – had been seen only fleetingly or else isolated at temperatures a few degrees above absolute zero. Doubt had been expressed about whether such a bond could be made stable. Reference: DM King et al, Science, 2012, DOI: 10.1126/science.1223488
