Quicker checks for safer water

  • Quicker checks for safer water | Chemistry World - Scientists in the Netherlands have developed and tested a new method that uses Raman spectroscopy to quickly identify harmful bacteria in drinking water. This could prevent contaminated drinking water from making people ill by detecting deadly bacteria before it ever reaches the tap.(10.1039/c3ay40289d)

    Watching single nanoparticles at work

Watching single nanoparticles at work - By shining laser light on the modified tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM), researchers in Germany and the Netherlands have been able to watch a catalytic reaction in real time, zoomed right in to the nanoscale. The technique combines AFM with Raman spectroscopy, using the silver-coated AFM tip to boost the reaction’s Raman signal while also acting as the catalyst. Using this hybrid approach, the researchers could follow the catalytic conversion of reactants into products with a spatial resolution of just a few nanometres.(10.1038/NNANO.2012.131)

    Blocking cancer’s path

  • Blocking cancer's path - A concise synthesis of the natural product rasfonin could reignite interest in this molecule as a tool to develop cancer drugs, say scientists from the Netherlands. Adriaan Minnaard and Ben Feringa's group from the University of Groningen developed the synthesis, which has a higher overall yield and takes fewer steps than previous syntheses, they say.
