Nanofibers clean sulfur from fuel

Nanofibers clean sulfur from fuel - Sulfur compounds in petroleum fuels have met their nano-structured match. University of Illinois researchers developed mats of metal oxide nanofibers that scrub sulfur from petroleum-based fuels much more effectively than traditional materials. Sulfur has to be removed because it emits toxic gasses and corrodes catalysts. Such efficiency could lower costs and improve performance for fuel-based catalysis, advanced energy applications and toxic gas removal.(10.1038/nnano.2012.194)

Electrons confined inside nano-pyramids

Electrons confined inside nano-pyramids - Quantum dots are nanostructures of semiconducting materials that behave a lot like single atoms and are very easy to produce. Given their special properties, researchers see huge potential for quantum dots in technological applications. Before this can happen, however, we need a better understanding of how the electrons "trapped" inside them behave. Dresden physicists have recently observed how electrons in individual quantum dots absorb energy and emit it again as light.(10.1021/nl302078w)

Nickelblock: An element’s love-hate relationship with battery electrodes

Nickelblock: An element's love-hate relationship with battery electrodes - Battery materials on the nano-scale reveal how nickel forms a physical barrier that impedes the shuttling of lithium ions in the electrode, reducing how fast the materials charge and discharge.(10.1021/nl302249v)
