The Alchemist on Chemistry

The Alchemist hears of a downside to graphene emerging from calculations on defects in less than crystalline forms of the material that could have implications for its applications, we also pick up on protective polymer spacesuits for fruit flies, the missing link in medical samples and how electrons can be used to watch atoms move in reaction transition states. In environmental news, black carbon ends up in the red rather than being green and finally US biochemistry wins a prestigious award in Germany.

Chemical chameleon tamed: Researchers give floppy molecule a structure through solvent effects

  • Chemical chameleon tamed: Researchers give floppy molecule a structure through solvent effects - How you get the chameleon of the molecules to settle on a particular "look" has been discovered by chemists in Germany. The molecule CH5+ is normally not to be described by a single rigid structure, but is dynamically flexible. By means of computer simulations, the team showed that CH5+ takes on a particular structure once you attach hydrogen molecules.(10.1103/PhysRevLett.110.083003)

Blink and you’ll miss it | Chemistry World

  • Blink and you'll miss it | Chemistry World - Single-molecule spectroscopy can provide new insights into the dynamics of biological and material science, but analysing the data from this technique is no simple task. To this end, scientists in Germany have developed a new method for tracking single fluorescent molecules, using linear programming solvers.(10.1039/c3cp44693j)
