    Fascinating exposition as usual :-) . I was totally unaware of the use of lead compounds for camouflaging submarines, and the reason for the grooved lead blocks and the use of lead glass.

    One of my favourite anecdotes is the reason we call the graphite in pencils ‘lead’. It is such a sof metal that it is able to slough off a layer, thus making a dark grey mark on paper. Apparently it was used for this purpose before the advent of graphite.
